'It can be life or death for a business': why an innovative culture is crucial
The key to creating a healthy work environment is through empowerment and inclusivity, says Jennifer Davidson, Founder of Sleek Events.
There can be a tendency in business to think of culture as the “fluffy” part of running a company - the office foosball tables and the Christmas party. It’s much more than that. Culture is the driving force that shapes how organisations operate and thrive, and creating the right one can be life or death for a business.
Nowhere is that more true than in the events industry, where a culture of collaboration, creativity and inclusivity are paramount to delivering stand-out events. Colleagues need to feel invested in the business they work for, empowered to advance their careers, and comfortable sharing their ideas, regardless of gender, race, or position within the company.
The events industry has so far been a little slow to effect cultural change. A recent study by IBTM shows that although 77% of event management industry workers are women, only 16% hold director positions compared to 32% of men. This stat alone suggests we still need to improve on providing the flexibility, progression, and policies necessary to help every person thrive. Without thriving teams, we cannot deliver the best possible work.
